Snow Geese Landing Around Me

I was standing in the middle of a cornfield and heard a noise behind me. Turned around and saw all these birds, thousands, coming in my direction. It was glorious.

The Albuquerque Rose Gardeners plant and maintain the rose garden at the Tony Hillerman Library in Albuquerque. The garden is a treasure. I made this photograph of the peace rose a few years ago.

On a journey from Irving, Texas, where I had visited an uncle who lived in an assisted living facility, I stopped by the Bosque del Apache in New Mexico. The area is known around the world by bird photographers because of its destination for Sandhill cranes and Snow geese for overwintering. On my fist visit, I spent a day at an area called the Boardwalk, photographing this heron for four or five hours, having arrived at 5:30a. At about eleven that morning, this bird flew low over my left shoulder, then down along the surface of the pond, where I made this photograph. The light was shining for me that morning.

lightning over albuquerque

As you’re likely aware, Albuquerque sits in a bowl, mostly in the valley of the Rio Grande. From my apartment near the bottom of that bowl, we have a view of many storms that move along the ridge line of the Sandia range. This photograph was made of lightning strikes over a 20 second period.
